CLYDEBANK MALE VOICE CHOIR D.O

HISTORY

Homepage

Over the years the Choir has had many Festival successes, both at local Glasgow competitions and  also travelling to Blackpool and Morecambe to win awards. Taking part in BBC Songs of Praise recordings has been a regular feature of the choir’s work as well as the many concerts for various local charitable organisations.

Although many of the choristers were called away during the Second World War, the Choir was still able to give many concerts in aid of Charity and War and Memorial Funds, even singing and entertaining troops in converted sheds at Singer.

In its 100 year history the Choir has only had 11 conductors, a remarkable feat!

In more recent times the Choir were invited to lead the communal singing at Murrayfield prior to the 1998 Scotland v England Calcutta Cup rugby match, and at Hampden before the Scotland v Australia soccer match earlier in 2000. This has led to several more invitations back to Hampden Park which are much enjoyed by choir and spectators alike. The Choir form part of the Scottish Massed Male Voice Choir which has performed at the Royal Concert Hall, Glasgow.

A recent development for the Choir was the recording of  “a hundred years of song” . The music on this recording demonstrates the choirs repertoire of a wide variety of song, with music from the shows, folk songs, as well as hymns and spirituals. To purchase a copy contact the Secretary, Graham Hughes.

The Choir has travelled far since those early days, but its aim remains the same :- The study of choral music as suited to male voices and to give the listening public the highest standard of male voice singing.

New members are always made most welcome at rehearsals, which are held at Clydebank Town Hall on Tuesday evenings commencing at 7.30pm. For more information contact the Secretary, Graham Hughes
